Hi all! So what's the difference between 24M and 2T you ask? I've wondered this question many times as I would hold up two sizes side by side at Carter's, Target and Old Navy, wondering what in the heck was the difference between 24m and 2T!
I also wondered if size 6 months means that my baby should start wearing that size when they turn 6 months....or is it up until 6 months???
WELL...size dilemmas, be gone! I am here to bring you some clarity on how to understand infant and toddler sizing and tell you the difference between 24M and 2T.
The Difference Between 24M and 2T
Size 0-3M fits babies from birth until 3 months old. Sometimes this size is needed for newborns who are born too big to fit into size newborn. 0-3M is also the same as size 3M. So when you see just 3M on the tag, that means the average-sized baby should fit into that size anywhere from birth up until 3 months old. Size 3M does NOT mean the baby should start wearing that size when he/she turns 3M. It means it should fit UP UNTIL 3 months old.
Size 3-6M or just 6M is for babies aged 3 months and growing out of them by 6 months.
Size 6-9M or just 9M is for babies to wear from age 6 months to age 9 months.
Size 9M-12M...you get the point!
Once a baby turns 12 months, their growth begins to slow. That's why you'll notice sizes have 6-month increments between switching to the next size up.
Size 12M-18M or 18M is estimated to fit average-size kids aged 12 months to 18 months. And then they should be ready to wear 18M-24M or just 24M for the last 6 months before turning two years old.
Now, here's the confusing part! Are sizes 24M and 2T the same??
The answer is NO.
Then what's the difference between 24M and 2T?
Size 18-24M or just 24M is the next up after they grow out of 12-18 months. Children wear that size for 6 months until they turn two years old. And at that point (happy birthday!!) the kid is ready for size 2T! 2T should be the appropriate size for two-year-old toddlers for most of their 2nd year.
You see, babies grow very rapidly during the first year, so sizing is done in 3-month increments. After 12 months, the growth slows a bit and sizes are done in 6-month increments. Lastly, after 2 years old, sizes only change once per year on average.
I will also add that another difference between 24M and 2T is that 24M clothing usually leaves room in the bum for a diaper. In fact, sizes 0-24M are made to accommodate diapers in the bum area.
I hope knowing the difference between 24M and 2T along with the other sizing information helps when trying to decide what size to buy your littles!
